Diabetic nephropathy is a common microvascular complication
that accounts for a substantial portion of diabetes-related
morbidity and mortality. Hyperglycemia has been implicated
as a causal factor in the development of microvascular diabetic
complications; and evidence underscores the need for strict
glycemic control in both primary and secondary prevention
of diabetic nephropathy. Glycemic Control for the
Kidney, by the Kidney: Exploring the Role of SGLT2 Inhibition
in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is a live, 90-minute
CME activity designed to meet the educational needs of clinicians
involved in the care of patients with type 2 diabetes. The
symposium features a panel of expert faculty, representing
the specialties of endocrinology and nephrology. The activity
encompasses a scientific update on the role of hyperglycemia
in nephropathy, as well as detailed discussions of the rationale
and available data regarding the use of a novel oral hypoglycemic
therapy that interferes with renal glucose reabsorption via
selective inhibition of the sodium-glucose transporter-2 (SGLT2).
Following the presentations, attendees will have the opportunity
to participate in a question and answer session.
This activity is designed for physicians with special education,
training, and interest in the practice of clinical endocrinology.

Upon completion of this course, the participants should be
able to:
• Describe the role of hyperglycemia in the development
and progression of diabetic nephropathy
• Explain how an SGLT2 inhibitor acts to reduce blood
glucose and what its clinical role may be in the treatment
of T2DM
• Summarize the evidence from observational, preclinical,
and clinical trials regarding the efficacy and safety of SGLT2
inhibition

The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists is accredited
by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education
(ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists designates
this educational activity for a maximum of 1.5 AMA PRA
Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should only claim
credit commensurate with the extent of their participation
in the activity.
